It is a complex phenomenon, but also simply an experience.’ I even argue, in my recent texts, that vision is not the most important sense in experiencing architecture. The most important sense is our existential […]

]]> Update, circulate http://www.minutes.fi/themes/may/update-circulate/ Thu, 21 May 2020 08:56:55 +0000 http://www.minutes.fi/?p=5663 Growing up, my mother used to change our place with very little means but great imagination. Going through random pictures taken in my home, I notice the same tendency.  Most of the things in our home have been with us for a long time and many of them are not stylish or go particularly well together. […]

No matter how visually beautiful it may be, people are not drawn to it, it feels somehow sad, unloved, uninviting…  We had a little bit of that going on in our living room some time ago. While everyone liked the sofa, no one wanted to spend time […]

]]> Interiors: Grethe Meyer http://www.minutes.fi/themes/january/interiors-grethe-meyer/ Fri, 17 Jan 2020 15:56:22 +0000 http://www.minutes.fi/?p=5602 I picked up an old book, Scandinavian Modern. Pictures of designer Grethe Meyer’s home felt relevant for now. I love the unpretentious and cozy feel of it. Born in 1918, Meyer trained as an architect but is best known for her ceramic work. In her kitchen, the large shelving unit is filled with old and […]

]]> 1993 http://www.minutes.fi/themes/september/1993/ Mon, 23 Sep 2019 10:56:52 +0000 http://www.minutes.fi/?p=5524 When searching for the balance between bohemian and minimalistic, free-form and refined, I often find myself pulling out books and images of Vincent Van Duysen’s interiors. Along with buildings, the Belgian architect focuses on interior and furniture design, and has an impressive portfolio in all three areas. But as it often happens with creative people, […]

]]> Get Grounded http://www.minutes.fi/themes/natural-instincts/get-grounded/ Fri, 01 Feb 2019 13:59:49 +0000 http://www.minutes.fi/?p=5339 It is amazing how much the floor and the lighting does to a space. The large vintage rug calms and grounds our winter bedroom that would feel much too light and sterile without it. My home went through a major renovation some ten, fifteen years ago and, let’s face it, times were different then. All […]

]]> Mood Light http://www.minutes.fi/themes/darker-days/mood-light/ Wed, 05 Dec 2018 10:00:52 +0000 http://www.minutes.fi/?p=5279 Beautiful light makes a space feel right. Where I live, the answer to all most interior issues between November and January is mood light. Bring more warm, dim, low-level light in your home and it will be instantly cozier. In my home, three light sources in one space is the minimum. With eight, nine, ten […]

This way, the space feels to expand beyond the windows and doors. Although you do not step outside the window, the free space outside is mentally yours. This can be easily sensed in rooms with no windows: they feel smaller in size than the same […]

]]> Better Living http://www.minutes.fi/themes/my-home/better-living/ Thu, 25 Jan 2018 06:00:03 +0000 http://www.minutes.fi/?p=4806 It takes some skill to get a space aesthetically right. To create something that pleases your eyes. But if you are interested in interiors and aesthetics, you learn about these things naturally, by living and moving around in your home. You learn about light and color and material and proportion and contrast. Yet the thing […]

The gratitude I feel towards my bathroom is enormous. It has to do with many things: the general high quality of plumbing in Finland, the amazing quality of tap water in Helsinki, as […]
