Art comes from art

I look at a lot of artists. I’m inspired by – I suppose I shouldn’t say ‘inspired’, but it’s not really influenced. I am inspired. Art comes from art.

Art comes from art, I think that’s so wisely said. The quote is by painter Cy Twombly.

Designer Ilse Crawford touched the same thing at a Savoy dinner earlier this year. Someone quite young asked her opinion on how to go about finding one’s own voice in the world of creativity and business. And Ilse’s answer, as always, was so encouraging.

She talked about some masters in the history of music, Mozart and Beethoven and their peers, how they followed each other and copied each other, but when we listen to their music today, it’s easy to tell them apart. They all have their unique style and sound.

The point she wanted to make was, that you don’t really have to worry about finding your voice, because whatever it is that you present or create, it comes from you. That’s your voice.
