Artek lounge chair and bench photographed in the corner of our kitchen in Helsinki, October 2020.

Following the Savoy renovation in January 2020, Artek produced a couple of pieces inspired by the refreshed restaurant interior, including two 402 chairs upholstered in black and white stripe.

The chairs caught my eye when I was looking for an easy chair for our new tiny home office / studio.

I wanted to find a chair that is easy to move. Being able to change places makes working at home so much more flexible, since there are two of us who need the right light and space for writing, reading, creating, making calls and attending all types of virtual meetings and events.

In the Savoy interior beautifully re-designed by Ilse Crawford and Studioilse, the Artek stripe fabric is seen in the banquette: the long sofa that frames the main dining room. The pattern is vivid yet orderly – and it manages to feel classic and modern at the same time.

Even on a much smaller surface, in the Aalto lounge chair in my home, I love the way the stripe pattern energizes the room. The chair currently lives in the studio, but can easily be moved around the flat, and it brings a nice vibe to each corner you place it in.
